The Direct Express card is a debit card you can use to access federal benefits. The card is issued by Comerica Bank on behalf of the United States Treasury Department.
The card is recommended by the Treasury Department as a safe, convenient alternative to paper checks.
When you sign up to receive your federal benefits on the Direct Express card, you will receive your payment every month, on your payment date without having to worry about cashing your check or having it lost or stolen.
Anyone receiving federal benefit payments, such as Social Security, SSDI, SSI, or Veterans assistance, can enroll.
You can use your Direct Express card to withdraw cash from Automated Teller Machines (ATMs), make purchases at stores that accept Debit MasterCard, and get cash back when you make those purchases
In addition, you can use the card to pay bills online.

To get the best out of your Direct Express card, it’s important to sign up for an online account. Here is what you can do with your Direct Express online account:

Direct Express Card Login Guide
To login to the Direct Express online portal, follow the instructions below.
Step 1 – Visit Direct Express Website
The first step to logging into your Direct Express online account is to visit the Direct Express website. Click here to be taken there.
Once on the site, you need to select your appropriate card number to be taken to the correct login page.
Step 2 – Select your Card Number
If your Card Number starts with 5332 48 or 5115 63, check the appropriate circle as shown below and follow the instructions.
Note that we have provided login instructions below for both. Scroll down to see the instructions for your specific card number.
If your Card Number starts with 5332 48, you will be taken to a login page that looks like the one below.
Step 3 – Enter your Login Information
Once there, enter your User ID in the space provided, and hit the “Submit” button as shown in the image below.
The next step is to enter your password on the next page, provided you entered the correct User ID.
If you do not remember your User ID, click on the “Forgot User Id” link as shown below.
For Direct Express Card Numbers that start with 5115 63, check the appropriate box below.
You will be taken to a login page that looks like the one below. Once there, enter your User ID and Password in the appropriate space.
Next, enter the Visual Verification code that appears on your screen.
You must enter the correct Visual Verification code in order to proceed.
Next, click on “Login”.
That will take you to your Direct Express account page.
Once you are logged into your account, you will be able to, manage your profile, set up alerts and notifications, and activate your card, among the other online account functions listed above.
However, If you do not remember your password, click on the “Forgot Your Password” link as shown below.
You will be taken to a page like the one below where you will have to enter your User ID and the Visual Verification code shown on your screen to retrieve your password.

You will then be asked to enter your Direct Express card number and the Visual Verification code shown on your screen to retrieve your User ID.
How to Activate and Register a new Direct Express Card
There are three ways to activate your Direct Express debit card.
First, you can activate your Direct Express card, by calling the Customer Service Department at 1-888-741-1115.
Customer Service can be reached 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.
For Hearing impaired: 1-866-569-0447. For International: 1-765-778-6290 – (Collect).
You will be required to enter the card number printed on the front of your card, your date of birth and the last four digits of your Social Security number.
Second, you can activate your card online. To do so, visit the Direct Express website and locate the “Activate/Register Card” section as shown below.
Enter your card information and click the “activate/register” button for further instructions.
Third, you can activate your card via the Direct Express mobile application.
You can download the Direct Express app at the Apple Appstore or on Android’s Google Play store.
Once you download the app, click on “Register” to activate your card.
Check Direct Express Card Balance
There are 4 ways you can check the balance on your Direct Express Debit card:
Option 1: Online
The first option to checking the balance on your direct express card is to log into your account. Follow the instructions above to login to your account.
Option 2: Using Direct Express App
The second option to checking the balance on your Direct Express card is to download the Direct Express mobile App.
You can download the Direct Express app at the Apple Appstore or on Android’s Google Play store.
Option 3: At an ATM
The third option is to check your card balance at an ATM that accepts MasterCard Debit cards.
Option 4: Call Customer Service
Finally, the fourth option to checking the balance on your Direct Express Debit MasterCard is to call their customer service number toll free at 888-741-1115.

Is the Direct Express Card safe?
Yes, the funds on the Direct Express card is FDIC-insured up to the maximum legal limit.
In addition, federal consumer laws protect you against unauthorized use of your card.
If you are a victim of fraud or see unauthorized transactions on your card, contact Direct Express customer service immediately.
Finally, if your card is lost or stolen, it will be replaced upon request.
Can I get cash at a bank teller window?
Yes, you can use your Direct Express card to get cash at a bank teller. There is no fee to withdraw cash at a MasterCard member bank location.
When using your card at the bank teller window, present your card and tell the cashier the amount of cash you wish to receive.
You may be asked to show identification and sign a receipt.
If the bank teller has any questions, he or she may call the toll-free Customer Service at 1-866-606-3311.
Can I transfer money to a checking or savings account?
Yes, you can transfer money from your Direct Express account to a personal U.S. bank account. This includes a checking or savings account with a bank or credit union.
However, there is a fee for this service. Direct Express will charge you a fee of $1.50 each time you transfer money from your account.
This fee will be deducted from your Direct Express card account.
To initiate a transfer, call the Direct Express Card Express Customer Service Department number on the back of your card or visit the website here.
Can Direct Express funds be garnished by creditors?
Social Security benefit payments are generally protected from garnishment under federal law.
This means that your creditors do not have the right to have these funds taken out of your account.
However, there are some exceptions:
Funds in your Direct Express account can be taken to satisfy child support or alimony obligations you owe.
Supplemental Security Income benefits are not subject to garnishment of any kind.
Also, if you have questions about a creditor’s right to remove funds from your account, contact your federal paying agency or your local legal aid organization.
