Here are some other helpful ways to avoid ATM fees:

Limit your ATM withdrawals

As a Direct Express cardholder, you are allowed one free ATM withdrawal for each federal benefits deposit to your account every month.

If your only deposit is your monthly Social Security or Supplemental Security Income payment, then you are entitled to one free ATM withdrawal per month.

After that, you will be charged 85 cents for each additional time you make an ATM withdrawal.

Get cashback at participating stores

You can use your Direct Express debit card to get cashback at participating stores that accept MasterCard.

Many retailers, including grocery stores and pharmacies, will give you the option to get cashback if you pay for your purchase with a debit card, including the Direct Express Debit MasterCard.

Use the Direct Express App

You can use the Direct Express mobile app to locate surcharge-free ATMs, in addition to checking your card balance and viewing your transaction history.

The app is available for both Apple and Android devices.
